Nuwara Eliya, popularly known as the little England is a beautiful city situated in the Central Province at a distance of 180 km from the capital Colombo. It is the city which has the lowest temperature of the whole country during a year being 2000m above the sea level and this climate along with its mountain ranges has given way to large tea plantations, vegetable and fruit plantations to survive quite successfully. It has got the name little England as a result of the houses and other buildings built by the British during their time of reign following English architectural styles and many of these buildings still remain in their original status.
Spectacular sceneries and places of interest are endless around Nuwara Eliya. Seeing the famous Anglican Church, strolling in the Victoria Park, boating at Gregory Lake, pony and horse riding at the Turf Club are a few things available for your enthusiasm inside the town. For those who want more excitement, there are other activities available like visits to tea plantations, golfing and hiking. The hikes would take you around the beautiful landscape which is full of waterfalls and plateaus jeweled with a variety of flowers and plants.
St. Clair waterfall, Lover’s Leap and Devon Falls are three beautiful waterfalls that are located around Nuwara Eliya. Then there is the Hakgala Botanical Gardens and the Horton Plains National Park you should visit if you are interested in soaking deeper in the specialties of the vicinity. You can reach the World’s End point by following a trail through Horton Plains.
A famous festival is held in Nuwara Eliya with the fall of the month of April every year when the whole countryside is at full swing of the Spring season. Local and international tourists arrives in scores to the city at this time and the most prominent happening is the horse races which take place at the racecourse in the center of the town.
