About Jaffna

The city of Jaffna began as the religious center of Sri Lanka with numerous beautiful temples which were later demolished by the Portuguese shortly after their intrusion in the city in 1620. Apart from being a religious city, Jaffna was also a Hindu-Tamil cultural center with much of its culture, having a significant influence of the Indian culture. Most of the temples here were Hindu temples. However, after the Portuguese intrusion and subsequent demolition of most of the Hindu Temples, many residents converted to Christianity. As a result, the once strongly Hindu town also became home to beautiful churches. The Dutch and the British also intruded the city in the later years. Nevertheless, many Hindu temples were later rebuilt in the mid -19th centuries.

Things to do and see in Jaffna
  • Nallur Temple

This famous Hindu temple is the principal place of worship in Jaffna. The temple features a golden arch as well as an elaborate gopuram. The temple stands on the same ground where another old temple used to stand. The original temple, which dates back to 1620, was among the temples which were demolished by the Portuguese. Most of the Hindu religious festivals are held in this temple, and the place is a sight to behold, especially if you happen to visit it during one of the festivals.

  • Karainagar Island

In case you are in search of the best spot to have quality time with your family, this is the place. The island boasts of some of the best waters for a relaxing swim during the day.   • Jaffna Fort

Popularly known for the fantastic sunset and water views, Jaffna fort is a sight to behold. The Portuguese constructed the building initially in the 1600s, and later the Dutch expanded it. Ever since it has been a major Jaffna tourist attraction partly due to the history associated with it and its fantastic architecture. Having suffered a significant blow from the Tamil rebels, the building currently undergoes restoration. Even though there is still considerable work to be done, the site remains spectacular.
